Figurative language

Figurative language makes writing more interesting

A simile compares two things using the words like or as.  Metaphors compare things by saying one thing is another thing.  Idioms are common expressions which have figurative (not literal) meanings. Personification gives human qualities to non-human things. Onomatopoeia is when words sound like the sound associated with the meaning of the word. Hyperbole is extreme exaggeration.
