Fractions on a Number Line

A number line helps students understand that fractions are numbers. They can use it to locate fractions, compare their sizes and find equivalent fractions.

What is a fraction on a number line?

A fraction on a number line represents a point. The space between two whole numbers is divided into equal parts, and each part represents a fraction of the whole.

For example, to place 3/4 on a number line:

1. Divide the space between 0 and 1 into 4 equal parts.

2. Start at 0 and count 3 parts to the right.

3. Mark the point 3/4.

Compare fractions on a number line

A number line shows which fraction is greater. The fraction farther to the right is the greater fraction.

For example, 3/4 is greater than 1/4 because 3/4 is farther to the right.

Find equivalent fractions

Equivalent fractions represent the same amount. On a number line, they appear at the same point.

For example, 1/2 and 2/4 both sit halfway between 0 and 1.

Place fractions greater than 1

Fractions can also be greater than 1. These fractions appear beyond 1 on the number line.

For example, 5/4 is one fourth past 1. It can also be written as the mixed number 1 1/4.

Practice fractions on a number line

Draw a number line from 0 to 1 and divide it into fourths. Ask your child to:

- Mark 1/4 and 3/4. Which fraction is greater?

- Find 2/4. What other fraction names the same point?

- Extend the number line to 2. Where would 5/4 go?

Answers: 3/4 is greater; 2/4 is equal to 1/2; and 5/4 is one fourth past 1.
