We went to New York for a family vacation last year with our, then, eight-year-old girl. Whoever says that New York is not for kids is wrong. She had a blast, as did we. There are so many great museums and activities geared towards our little ones. I wish this museum had opened in time for our visit too, but now we have a reason to come back.
MoMath, an interactive Museum of Math is opening in New York City on December 15, funded by Glenn Whitney, a math-loving financial analyst. Through games, activities and programs, MoMath’s mission is to “stimulate inquiry, spark curiosity, and reveal the wonders of mathematics. The museum’s activities will lead a broad and diverse audience to understand the evolving, creative, human, and aesthetic nature of mathematics.”
But it’s not all bad news for us that don’t dwell in NYC. A traveling exhibit, MathMidway, could be coming to a city near you. It showcases some of the activities that will be part of the permanent exhibit at MoMath. So, if you’d like to try the square-wheeled tricycle, or spin the universal wheel of chance, or dare to challenge the ring of fire, why not head to the following science museums that are hosting MathMidway on the following dates:
Lawrence Hall of Science, Berkeley, CA
September 21, 2012 through January 6, 2013
