As your kids enter their next grades this week or next, perhaps some of you are wondering what grade-levels your kids' reading and math knowledge is really at? Are they still ahead in reading? Will they still be struggling with math? One way to find out is to take an assessment online and we happen to provide one for free as part of our 14-day trial of K5 Learning.
In signing up for our trial, your child will receive a free online reading assessment and a free online math assessment. Further, he or she will gain access to our four math and reading programs for 14 days.
The assessment tests the student’s knowledge in 9 key reading and math skills.
5 key reading skills:
- Phonemic Awareness – identifying and working with individual sounds in spoken words.
- Phonics – understanding the relationships between written letters and spoken sounds.
- Sight Words – recognizing high frequency words to increase reading fluency.
- Vocabulary - understanding words and constructing meaning from their context.
- Reading Comprehension – understanding of fiction and non-fiction reading materials.
4 Key Math Skills:
- Numbers and Operations – simple counting through fractions and beyond.
- Measurement Concepts – including telling time and counting money.
- Geometry – understanding characteristics and properties of geometric shapes.
- Data analysis – learning how to collect, organize, display and analyze data.
How it works
An animated character will guide your child through the 100% online assessment. There is nothing to download or install. Your child will be asked a series of questions in different skill areas and then placed at the appropriate level within each sub-skill based on his or her answers.
Each assessment takes about 30 minutes, so be prepared to have your child focus for that period of time. For the most accurate result, let your child complete the assessment on their own. Some of the questions are supposed to be hard - to push the upper limits of your child’s current knowledge.
Free assessment report for parents
These reports provide an objective evaluation of your child’s reading and math skills. The reports will provide results in each sub-skill – for example, the report may show your child to be strong in phonics, but less so in reading comprehension.
Your child’s free reading and math assessment reports will be available immediately from the parent dashboard that you have created as part of your free trial.
