Did you know that at least 793 million people remain illiterate across the world? I had no idea there were that many that still don’t have the opportunity to learn to read and write.
What is World Read Aloud Day?
World Read Aloud Day is about bringing awareness to world illiteracy and making the statement that everyone has the right to learn to read and write. This day celebrates the power of words. Ambassadors advocate for every child’s right to an education and access to books and technology.
The organization behind this empowering day is LitWorld, a not-for-profit organization led by Executive Director Pam Allyn, a renowned literacy educator and advocate. This organization has reached into the farthest corners of the world to teach kids to read and write.
LitWorld joins together with teachers, parents, community members, and children to support sustainable literacy through the power of story in the world's most vulnerable communities. LitWorld educates community members to become literacy leaders through easy-to-use programs and resources and creates access to print materials that will help all children learn to read and write. Founded on the belief that children will grow to be empowered, intelligent, healthy, and productive global citizens through the power of literacy, LitWorld works towards this goal worldwide through Advocacy, Education and Access.
