Coordinate Grids Practice for Grade 5 Students

Key concepts

These are the key concepts grade 5 students learn.

Axes

X-Axis: The horizontal line.

Y-Axis: The vertical line.

Origin

The point where the x-axis and y-axis meet: (0, 0).

Quadrant I: Both x and y are positive (e.g., (3, 4)).

Quadrant II: x is negative, and y is positive (e.g., (-3, 4)).

Quadrant III: Both x and y are negative (e.g., (-3, -4)).

Quadrant IV: x is positive, and y is negative (e.g., (3, -4)).

Ordered pairs (x, y)

First Number: How far to move left or right (x-axis).

Second Number: How far to move up or down (y-axis).

Example: (5, 2) → Move 5 units right, then 2 units up.

Coordinate planes worksheets

In our grade 5 math section, we have several worksheets for students to practice coordinate grids.

Plot points on a coordinate grid

This first set of worksheets ask students to plot points in all four quadrants.

Plot points on a coordinate grid

Practice reading the coordinates of points on a grid

Next, students read the coordinates of points in all four quadrants.

Reading coordinate on a grid

Understanding the quadrants of the coordinate plane

Students identify where the quadrants points fall into in these worksheets.

Understanding the coordinates of a coordinate grid

Translations on a coordinate plane

Next students work on translating and rotating simple shapes on a coordinate plane.

Translations on a coordinate grid

Learn to plot functions on the coordinate plane

Students are given functions and use that function to generate ordered pairs and to plot those points on a coordinate plane.
