Comprehension exercises for third grade

These worksheets introduce basic comprehension concepts and skills such as identifying the main ideas of a text and their supporting details, relating cause and effect, making predictions based on what has been read and distinguishing between fact and fiction and between fact and opinion. Some students will need help in reading the texts and exercises.  Completing these comprehension exercises (with or without assistance) will help improve literacy skills.

Compare and contrast:  examine what details characters have in common

Main ideas & supporting details:  what is the text mostly about? What details make it more interesting?

Sequencing:  put events from a text in logical order

Story elements:  identify the characters, setting, problem, solution and author's purpose of a text

Cause and effect worksheets:  identifying the cause and effect of different events

Fact vs opinion:  identify whether statements are facts or opinions.

Prediction worksheets:  predicting what will happen next in a story
